Another meandering journey today so again lots of photos to share. I was off from work today for MLK Day so my old roommate and I met up at our old brunch/lunch haunt, Milk & Honey cafe on Division. The photo of the flowers was taken there as well as the 2 men... we were amused by the 'old timers' who looked like they were more used to eating at greasy spoon diners rather than Ukrainian Village/Wicker Park cafes.

Feeling a bit aimless after lunch I decided to hop on the blue line and go to Logan Square, hoping to grab a doughnut & coffee at New Wave cafe. Unfortunately it was packed wall-to-wall with people (someone definitely needs to open up another independent coffee shop in that neighborhood!) so I decided to walk along the boulevards for a bit and take some more pictures. My favorite is what I call the 'sidewalk to nowhere' a bit of pavement that no longer serves a purpose.

After my walk I managed to snag a seat at New Wave but alas they no longer sell doughnuts! Got a vegan chocolate chip cookie instead to satiate my sweet tooth.

On the way back to the El stop I ferreted out the Hemingway book from the free book box on the corner, it's a 1956 edition. We never read it in high school and I think it's time for me to read more of the literary classics.

  1. I love the two old men! And that Christmas tree has me cracking up, it almost looks like it's wearing a shower cap. :) I noticed New Wave had been doughnut-free for a while, what a bummer. (It does get SUPER busy in there, for sure.) Also: I'm convinced that book box is the best one in the city. I live around here and I'm forever finding good things in it!

  2. I'm jealous, I'd love to stop by the book box every day if it was closer to me! Now I need to be good and actually put some books IN the box to give back to the community hehe.

I actually went to New Wave b/c of your doughnut rec... have any other secret doughnut spots? I tried to have a lot when I was at home to make up for the lack of doughnuts here. :(

  3. I know what you mean about the book box, I have to start giving back, ha! As for the doughnuts - I do have some tips! Nightwood has delicious ones at brunch - complete with the "hole" served on the side. I promise that Old Fashioned Donuts at S. Michigan & 112th will change your life - get the donuts AND a fritter. The Bake & Destroy girl has a good Donut Database going - check that out here, scroll down for Chicago: http://donutdatabase.blogspot.com/ - and last but not least, the doughnuts that used to be at New Wave originated at Bite - I assume they still have them there, but I haven't been in a while, so I'm not sure. Oh! And one more - not exactly a doughnut, but the Paczki at Dinkel's Bakery are out of this world and worth the wait! (I can't believe I had this much to say about doughnuts!)
